Coping with Premenstrual Tension (PMT)

Premenstrual Tension (PMT), also known as Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS), is an ailment that affects some women during their menstruating years. While researchers do not entirely know what causes PMT, it is widely accepted that hormones play a major role. Consequently, women who regularly suffer from PMT often do not need to use a calendar to calculate when their monthly cycle is due; the physical, emotional and cognitive symptoms they experience give them (and their families) all the warning they need.

Fortunately, PMT is now widely recognized. There is no need for anybody to suffer in silence, as much-needed support and treatment for sufferers is readily available. Knowledge about the condition can offer successful self-help treatment. For instance, reducing intake of salt, sugar, caffeine and alcohol will help some women, while eating small amounts carbohydrate-rich foods several times per day may help tremendously.

PMT symptoms often respond well to vitamin and mineral supplements, particularly calcium and magnesium. Ibuprofen or Naprosyn are also effective for physical symptoms such as cramps, headaches, and general discomfort. However, it is always wise to seek advice from a doctor, as everybody's experiences with PMT vary.

A combination of many things, leading to an all-around change of lifestyle, can end much suffering with PMT. Arm yourself with as much information as you can and discover what works for you. Schedule in twenty minutes of aerobic exercise two or three times a week, and keep talking to your family for extra support; you can be back in control in no time.
