Depression - Cognitive Therapy

Cognitive therapy, also known as cognitive behavior therapy, is a form of treatment that is commonly used to fight types of depression and anxiety disorders. The treatment involves having the patient recognize their distorted and unrealistic thoughts and beliefs about themselves and replacing those thoughts with more realistic ideas. Cognitive therapy has show success in treating people of all ages.

Those who deal with patients through cognitive therapy, work to help these people recognize when they are entering into negative or unhelpful thought patterns. Then, patients are taught to modify these thought patterns and replace them with more realistic and beneficial thoughts. Cognitive therapy not only helps those dealing with depression, but has also been used along with medications, in the treatment for those suffering from bipolar disorders and schizophrenia.

Using cognitive therapy is based on the idea that how we think about others, and ourselves affects how we feel and how we act. Negative thoughts cause distress and trouble in our everyday lives, thus resulting in depression. Another example of how cognitive therapy works is by turning someone's self-depreciating thought patterns or cycle into helping them think that they are not worthless or useless. Cognitive therapy does not work at once. It can often take a very long time to stop a person from thinking or feeling negatively about themselves, others or their environment. This form of therapy takes practice and patience on the part of both the patient and the therapist. Cognitive therapy can be both beneficial and valuable when treating patients with certain forms of depression.
